I was born in Poland and immigrated with my family to the USA in 1961. I attended the University of Alabama, where I studied biology for two years. I spent one year at Monmouth University and then attended Montclair State University part-time, studying art and photography. After taking all the available sculpture courses in the undergraduate department, I was allowed to take three graduate sculpture courses—until they found out I didn't have a BA. That's when my formal education ended and my self-education began. Being human is a constant struggle between defining ourselves as individuals and trying to fit in with "the group." Doing it my way didn't work well in a university setting in the early 70s. Artists such as Paul Klee and Henry Moore and writers such as Gary Zukav, Fritjof Capra, and others of that time sent me on an exploration of self, my art, and the world around me. That, along with my study of biology, showed me that a galaxy, an ameba, a man, and his thoughts are organized from the smallest unit into ever more complex systems, and they are all interconnected. From this crucible arose my additive sculpting process. From simple blocks to ever more complex shapes and forms, I create unique sculptures shaped by my ever-expanding life experience and understanding of the universe we help create. Earning a living allowed me limited time to work on my art; nevertheless, I built a large body of work that I exhibited and sold throughout my life. Now that I've retired, I've devoted all my time to my passion. People ask me how long it takes to make my sculptures. My favorite answer is, "When you love what you do, time does not exist." I bring a unique perspective to sculpture—one that has been decades in the making. After retiring, I felt the need to explore. Something was missing; the urge grew stronger. I turned to woodturning. That gave me a new avenue to explore—to bring to this reality some of the things I created in my imagination. Another tool in the toolbox. Something was still missing, so I returned to exploring the unseen, the unexplainable, the energy, and spirituality. The life journey continues with creating beautiful things and building a life worth living for a long time.
